Ear Infections in Children: Why Chiropractic May Be the Solution You Haven’t Considered

Ear infections—also known as otitis media—are one of the most common reasons children visit the pediatrician. In fact, over 80% of children will experience at least one ear infection by the age of three (1). While antibiotics are often prescribed, they may not always be the best—or only—solution.

At Aspire Family Chiropractic, we see many families searching for a more natural, drug-free option. Let’s explore why recurring ear infections happen, why antibiotics aren't always the answer, and how gentle chiropractic care can help restore balance to your child’s health.

What Causes Ear Infections?

Ear infections typically occur when fluid builds up in the middle ear behind the eardrum and becomes infected. This often follows a cold or sinus infection and is especially common in young children due to the immature structure of their Eustachian tubes, which are shorter, narrower, and more horizontal than in adults—making drainage more difficult. Symptoms associated with ear infections include: fussiness or irritability, tugging at the ear, fever, hearing difficulties and trouble sleeping.

Why Antibiotics Aren’t Always the Best First Step

Although antibiotics are commonly prescribed, research shows that most ear infections are viral, not bacterial—meaning antibiotics won’t help (2). Even when bacteria are involved, the body often resolves the infection on its own.

A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that 80% of children with ear infections recovered within a few days without antibiotics (3). Overprescribing antibiotics can also lead to antibiotic resistance, disruption of the gut microbiome (stay tuned for a blog post on this!), and increased risk of future infections.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a “watchful waiting” approach for many children over 2 years old with mild symptoms (4).

The Chiropractic Connection: How Adjustments Can Help

The nervous system controls every function in the body, including the drainage of the ears and sinuses. Misalignments in the upper cervical spine (especially the top two bones, atlas and axis) can interfere with nerve function and lymphatic drainage, contributing to fluid buildup in the middle ear.

So, where does chiropractic care fit into this? By adjusting the spine we...

  • Improving nerve communication between the brain and ear structures
  • Encouraging natural drainage of the Eustachian tubes
  • Reducing inflammation and tension in surrounding muscles
  • Supporting immune system function

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics followed children with chronic ear infections who received chiropractic adjustments. Over 93% of cases improved, many avoiding surgery or further medication (5).

Safe & Gentle Care for Children

At Aspire Family Chiropractic, we use gentle, specific techniques tailored for pediatric patients. Adjustments for infants and young children are incredibly light—often using no more pressure than you would use to check the ripeness of an avocado!

Parents often report that after a few adjustments, their child sleeps better, has fewer ear infections, experiences improved immune response, and appears more focused.

We’ve seen countless families come in feeling frustrated—tired of the endless rounds of antibiotics, sick visits, and sleepless nights. And we’ve witnessed the power of the body to heal when given the right support.

“We wish we had known about chiropractic care sooner. After months of ear infections and antibiotics, a friend told us to try Aspire. After just a few visits, our son hasn’t had another infection in months. Total game-changer.”
